Rice Leads Rutgers To Win Over Ball State - Crowd soars to 31,455 In Second Annual International Bowl
The second International Bowl lived up to all its advance billing as the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights and the Ball State University Cardinals delighted a crowd of 31,455 at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Saturday, January 5.
Rutgers running back Ray Rice ran for an International Bowl record 280 yards in leading the Scarlet Knights to a 52-30 victory. The highly-rated junior, who finished third in the nation in rushing, was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Rice scored four touchdowns, set a school record with his rushing total and became just the fifth player to reach 2,000 rushing yards in a season in U.S. collegiate football history.

“I've been around great, great running backs in college football and the National Football League and this guy today is second to none from what I've seen," Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said. "It was an amazing performance and one that shouldn't shock any of us because he's come close to it before.”
Quarterback Mike Teel also had a strong game for Rutgers. He opened the game with a 36-yard touchdown strike to Tim Brown. Later, Teel found Tiquan Underwood for a 35-yard major and Kenny Britt for a 47-yarder.
|
|
While Ball State quarterback Nate Davis fired three touchdown passes, including two to Darius Hill and one to Dante Love, the Cardinals never got close enough to mount a serious challenge.
“It gave us a great opportunity. We had a great time in Toronto,” Ball State head coach Brady Hoke said. It’s a fantastic city… it was a great atmosphere to play in, and a tremendous facility.”
International Bowl Executive Director Ken Hoffman spoke positively about this year’s game and said he expects the Toronto-based game to continue to grow.
“The International Bowl is really carving a niche on the Bowl circuit,” he remarked. “People are really enjoying the international flavour. We feel proud of what we’ve done and feel buoyed by the future.”

2008 Teams
|
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Rutgers, located in Piscataway, New Jersey, is considered by many to be one of the most remarkable turnaround stories in College Football history.
Much of Rutgers' success is credited to the leadership of Coach Greg Schiano who built a team of extremely talented players, led by Junior running back Ray Rice.
The Rutgers dual receiving threat is lead by Junior Tiquan Underwood and closely followed by Sophomore Kenny Britt.
|

|
| Not to be outdone by the offence, the Scarlet Knights' defence, led by Junior DE Jamaal Westerman, is ranked in the top 10 in the country.
Rutgers' fans are some of the most vibrant in College Football - they promise to bring their unique flavour in large numbers to Toronto.
|
|
Ball State Cardinals
Ball State, located in Muncie, Indiana, boasts a potent aerial attack which features three of the nation's best offensive players.
Sophomore quarterback Nate Davis threw for 3,376 yards (13th in the nation) and 27 TD (T-13th in the nation).
Davis frequently targets Junior WR Dante Love or Junior TE Darius Hill. Love caught 87 balls for 1,229 yards (5th in the nation), and scored nine TDs. Hill was a semi-finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation's best tight-end. Hill finished the regular season with 837 yards and nine TDs.
|

|
| Earlier this season, the powerful Ball State offence put up 40 points against a tough Nebraska team.
Chris Miller continues the tradition of Ball State punters by being named on the AFCA All-America First Team.

Volunteers
|
Volunteers were critical to the success of the 2007 International Bowl. Volunteers assisted not only during the game itself, but in the many events which made up International Bowl Week.
With an even greater number of festivities and events planned for the 2008 International Bowl, Volunteers are once again needed. If you are interested in lending a helping hand and having a great, first hand NCAA Division I football experience, we’d love to hear from you. For more information, please call the International Bowl office or e-mail volunteers@internationalbowl.org.
